Following issues has been detected when a report is designed to retrieve a lot of information (around more than 10k rows) and including high number of columns:
It takes a considerable amount of time for the report to load data.
When this kind of reports are exported to Excel, either the process takes a lot of time or it results on not exporting the report.
A lot of server resources consumption observed on Smart Reporting server, leading most of the time to a Java memory leak and application hangs due to lack of resources.
Verify the the Tomcat memory which is configured by default for Initial and Max memory pool, if required increase it based on the available RAM on the Server. Refer to knowledge article 000270129 to Increase the Tomcat memory for Smart Reporting.
This behavior of Smart Reporting not being able to export high amount of data to Excel has not been identified as a defect rather to a bad report designing process.
Smart Reporting was not developed as a tool to export high amount of data. As any other Business Intelligence tool, Smart Reporting was designed to integrate, analyze and present business information to support better business decision making.
Next recommendations can be followed as base guidelines to build reports:
A report should be created thinking on the audience:
What is the purpose of the report?
Which information should contain?
The report should present concise information.
It should be easy to read.
It should not contain large amount of columns.
Review why so many rows are required.
If still the requirement is to export high amount of data, consider the following:

Create a schedule to send/export the information on periods of time.
